In the studios: A narrative of hands - day 1

A narrative of hands is a study of hand gestures for Just Waves in Space.

Influenced heavily by the Vienna Secession / early expressionism movements as well as some obscure occult gestures..

Following a seasonally long absence from the studios; I decided to work solely on hands for a separate project, prior to diving into series 3 of Just Waves in Space. Within this series I intend to strip the work back and not utilise any props nor costumes, just hands...

I’ve also taken up researching and workshops on hand-made bespoke book binding with the intent to publish these seperately ahead of 'Just Waves in Space' as an anti-dote to its glacial pace.

On this night subzero temperatures froze my film and my Polaroid Specta chewed and half-ejected the films.  A newly established protocol emerged and seemed to work – giving the camera a friendly slap.

Strangely enjoyable. I love analog.

Ritual, repetition and restriction.

Intended as bookmark to this series. I’m now drawing within the work, an act of ritual framing which centralises and intensifies the figure. However I'm not sold on this direction...

I had high hopes for this 'element' but these shots were out of focus . But experimentation is healthy and I acknowledge wrong turns, who knows if this is somewhere to re-visit at a later date.

For now I've expunged all my film so it off to the stores to locate more Polaroids....afterwards I may move onto series 3 of Waves In Space...or I may re-visit this segment. I've become somewhat obsessed with hands of late and given 'Just Waves in Space' glacial pace I'm thinking of taking a short diversion...

In the studios - More of a glimpse of a dream

Another day (night actually) in the studios resolving the 2nd series of 'Just waves in space' - 'Lost in translation'. I've been using up my old - out of date film stock, the results were unpredictable. Switching to fresh film and everything is crystal clear once more...

Eventually I may enlarge these (especially this fist one) and embellish with geometry and other drawings....

Every shot a self portrait.

The night garden

To protect my vanity and the sensibilities of neighbour’s; new luxury curtains have been installed into our studios, to allow for nocturnal working…

This is something I’ve tried to avoid, but time continues to erode, I suppose every artist must make sacrifices …
